She doesn't design kitchens. She designs the moment you come home.

Barb Thorne has been in this industry since 1978 — from the ground up, through showrooms and co-ownership, and through decades of experience that have shaped one of the most seasoned independent kitchen designers in the region. She has been doing this longer than most of her clients have owned a home.

What she sells isn't cabinetry or countertops. It's the feeling of switching on the light in the morning and being hugged by your own kitchen. It's the room that holds everything — the tears and the laughter, the family dinners and the quiet coffees — designed by someone who listened before she ever picked up a pencil.

She works with one client at a time. She has no showroom quotas, no supplier allegiances, and no interest in designing what's trending. She has every interest in designing what's right for you.

Every project here began with a conversation and ended with a friendship. These are a few of the rooms that found their way into people's lives and stayed there.

What We Offer

Three ways to work together.

01

Full Kitchen Design

From the first conversation to the final walkthrough. Layout, cabinetry, finishes, sourcing, and full coordination of trades — with Barb present and invested at every stage. One client. Full attention. No shortcuts.

02

Forever Kitchen Consultation

A thoughtful design review for homeowners planning ahead. Barb assesses your current kitchen through the lens of how you'll want to live in it over the next decade — and what small or significant changes would make it work for you longer, better, and more beautifully.

03

Designer-to-Designer Consulting

For interior designers and design firms who need a seasoned kitchen specialist in their corner. Barb works behind the scenes — reviewing layouts, solving specification challenges, and bringing four decades of hard-won kitchen knowledge to the project without taking the relationship.

A Specialty Worth Knowing

The Forever Kitchen

The best kitchen you'll ever have isn't necessarily the most fashionable one. It's the one that works the way you actually live — today, and ten years from now.

Barb's Forever Kitchen approach is designed for homeowners who are thinking ahead: empty nesters simplifying after the kids have left, couples building the home they always meant to build, and anyone who wants a kitchen that ages as gracefully as they do.

This isn't about designing for decline. It's about designing with wisdom — making choices now that you won't have to undo later, in a space that grows with you rather than against you.

Function Over Fashion

Layouts and details chosen for how you live, not how kitchens look in magazines right now.

Thoughtful Accessibility

Subtle design choices that make a kitchen more comfortable and easier to use at every age — without looking institutional.

Quality That Lasts

Products and materials chosen for longevity, not trend. Barb won't recommend anything she doesn't believe in.

Honest Guidance

No upselling. No supplier allegiances. Just the best advice for your specific kitchen and your specific life.

How We Think

A few things Barb believes.

Soul over fashion.

A kitchen should look like the people who live in it, not like the Pinterest board everyone else is copying. The most beautiful rooms tell a story. Barb's job is to find yours.

Shut up and listen.

You learn more that way. Barb has spent decades sitting across from clients and listening — really listening — before she ever picks up a pencil. The design comes after the listening. Not before.

A great design never goes out of style.

Trends come and go. Barb has been around long enough to watch them come and go. The rooms she's most proud of are the ones that still look right fifteen years later.

The kitchen is the gathering room. For all of it.

The laughs, the tears, the Sunday dinners and the 2 AM glasses of water. You never know — a well-designed kitchen might inspire the next great chef. Or just the next great conversation.

How It Works

From conversation to completion.

The Conversation

Everything begins with listening. Barb learns how you live, what you love, what hasn't worked, and what you're dreaming of. No forms. No rush. Just a real conversation.

The Design

Layouts, cabinetry, finishes, and every detail — developed around your life, not a template. Barb brings her full experience and absolute honesty to every recommendation.

The Build

Barb coordinates your trades, manages the timeline, and stays present through the process. She's the one who solves what others can't — and she's still answering the phone when things get complicated.

The Moment

The light switch. The smile. The kitchen that feels exactly like home. That's what all of this is for.

Your Investment

What good design costs.

Good design isn't an expense — it's the decision you won't have to undo. The choices made at the beginning of a renovation determine whether you'll love your kitchen in fifteen years or wish you'd done it differently.

Barb's fees vary by project scope and are structured around the work your project actually requires — not a package that may or may not fit. Every engagement begins with an initial consultation, which is time well spent on the choices ahead.

If you're comparing designers on price alone, Barb is likely not the right fit — and she'll be the first to tell you so. But if you're looking for someone who will give your project her full attention, her full honesty, and her full forty-seven years, that conversation is worth having.

Initial consultations begin at a set rate and are applied toward your project if we decide to move forward together. Reach out to begin that conversation.

Get in Touch

Let's have a conversation.

Every project begins the same way — with a conversation. Tell Barb a little about your kitchen, your home, and what you're hoping for. She'll take it from there.
